October Is Special Needs Law Month

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) has designated October
as Special Needs Law Month. Many people with disabilities need specialized
legal assistance because they depend on government benefits for their
medical care and other daily needs. Becoming eligible for government benefits
can be a complex and complicated process. Then, once the eligibility maze
has been successfully navigated, legal assistance is often still needed
because the guidelines for maintaining benefits eligibility seem to continually change.
Many attorneys who incorporate special needs law into their practices do
so because of the personal experiences of a loved one or a close friend
with a disability. Others simply want to help people with disabilities
get and keep the services and assistance they need to successfully lead
their daily lives. No matter how the calling begins, assisting people
with special needs does indeed become a calling. It is this dedication,
devotion and passion for enhancing the lives of people with disabilities
that Special Needs Law Month highlights and celebrates.
Families with a loved one with special needs don’t have to figure
out the government benefits system alone. They can turn to attorneys with
special needs law expertise to assist and guide them. NAELA’s designation
of October as Special Needs Law Month helps to spread the word that knowledgeable
legal resources exist and are assessable in communities throughout the
United States.
