A Dilemma For The Sandwich Generation

As a member of the sandwich generation, you are trying to care for both your children and your aging parents at the same time. As you are feeling pulled in two different directions at once, the thought may cross your mind that caring for your parents, especially if it is a single parent, may be easier if your parent moved into your home.

That move could mean one less trip across town to your parent’s house and one less house’s yard and maintenance to worry about. It could sound like the answer to your dilemma of never having enough hours in the day. However, don’t just jump to the conclusion that a move is the solution. Spend some time really visualizing what that type of move would mean for you and your family. Consider issues such as whether your house can accommodate your parent without sacrificing your privacy and theirs. Consider what 24/7 togetherness will mean to your family and your parent. Consider whether you want your parent participating in the discipline of your children or even the preparation of the meals.

For some families, consolidating the family under one roof could make perfect sense, but for other families, it could lead to increased stress rather than decreased stress. If moving your parent into your house doesn’t make sense for your family, and you have a choice in the matter, it is ok to choose another option. Don’t make the move out of a sense of guilt or a misguided belief that this is what “good” children do for their parents. What matters most is what makes sense for the mental and physical wellbeing of you, your parent and your family, not what makes sense to outsiders looking in. So, before your exhaustion seduces you with the mirage of Norman Rockwell harmony, make sure you are truly leaping into a better solution for everyone.
