Don't Forget Your Pets

When people think of estate planning, they think of providing for their family members and maybe some close friends who feel like family, but oftentimes they overlook some of their most vulnerable family members – their pets. Pets can easily get lost in the shuffle that follows death. Their owner may have thought that formal provisions for their beloved pet were not necessary because surely someone would give the pet a home.

Family members may want to give the pet a home but let’s face it, taking proper care of a pet costs money. Food, visits to the vet, pet sitters and supplies can add up quickly. There are also the challenges of introducing a new pet into a household that already has an established pet. Don’t leave your pet’s future to chance. Take the time to include provisions relating to your pet in your will. In some states, you can even set up a trust specifically to cover the future costs of caring for your pet.

At the death of their owner, pets are already feeling their own form of grief and confusion. They need the stability and love that immediate adoption by a pre-arranged new owner can provide and the new owner needs the peace of mind that pre-arranged financial arrangements for the pet’s care can provide.
